Representative Hannah Pingree
I have tried in this section to provide relevant information on the most pressing issues directly affecting our communities and industries. Included on each of these issues pages (always accessible within this section from the menu at left) are details about state programs and policy, background information on each issue and additional resources where available.
Maine is a state with tremendous assets and opportunities, as well as significant challenges. Maine has an aging population (we're one of the oldest states in the country), shrinking school populations, and ongoing job losses in many of our traditional industries. We also have a mounting property tax burden and a high demand from out-of-state buyers for coastal properties, which is forcing many Maine citizens from their homes.
But there is good news. In the past two years, more young people moved to Maine than had done so in a decade. We led New England last year in per capita income growth, and we have an unemployment rate well below the national average. We have seen a rebirth in many of our traditional industries— from boat building to wood products, and a growing technical and creative economy.
I believe government needs to be fair and proactive in making Maine a good, safe and clean place for families to live and raise their children, start their businesses and find jobs.
If there are other issues you are interested in, please let me know and I will try to provide more information on this site. To learn more about state government, check out Maine's award winning state website at www.maine.gov.
