Legislative Sponsorship & Support
I think it is most important that Maine citizens have a chance to weigh in on legislative issues while they are being considered. In this section I will feature major relevant issues that are currently being considered by the 122nd Legislature (beginning December 3, 2004), including those bills I have sponsored and co-sponsored. The upcoming bills that will be considered this year will begin to be released in early 2005. Obviously, these are the ones most relevant and those that citizens can have an impact on. Be sure to check back often for updates as legislation is released.
Within this section I've also provided a record of the legislative actions I've sponsored and worked on during my previous sessions in the legislature including all bills, resolutions, orders, and sentiments in the interest of clarity and full disclosure of my position and actions on the issues affecting our lives as residents of coastal Maine. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you need additional information to help you get involved, and be sure to check our calendar of upcoming events at which you might be able to make your own voice heard.
What is a Bill?
Bills are the official documents legislators use to propose a change in current law, new programs, or new funding. If passed by a majority of the House and Senate and signed by the Governor, they will eventually become a law and be enacted by the state. Thus bills are probably the most useful and important items to follow, as they are the vehicle for most major programs, fixes, and changes. [ Bills » ]
What is a Resolution or Order?
Resolutions are expressions of opinion on behalf of the legislature and cover everything from foreign relations to the actions of Congress. Orders relate to the internal operation of the legislature and are not bills, but rather ideas for actions of the legislature: anything from the rules of the legislature to forcing action on an idea that is not a bill.
