The Issues: Schools
Schools are the center of Maine's small and island communities. I grew up on the island of North Haven and graduated in a class of five students from Maine's smallest K-12 public school, located on the island. In our community, the school's activities serve as the hub of island life, from winter basketball games to spring plays to the yearly knowledge fair.
Education, as all good policy makers know, is the foundation for a successful economy and economic opportunities. Maine has excelled in providing high-quality K-12 education to Maine kids and as a result, we have one of the highest high school graduation rates in the country. Our learning results program, middle-school laptop program, and many successful schools have made Maine's schools innovative and successful.
We also have a strong post-secondary education structure with the University of Maine System, the new Community Colleges, and many other private colleges. But despite our structure, we still have a low rate of college attendance and graduation. In addition, we need to ensure that more Maine students can afford college in or out of state.
