The Issues: Fair Voting
Many of us in Maine take our voting rights for granted. And we should be confident and proud of Maine's electoral system, one of the most transparent and progressive in the country. In addition, Maine posted one of the highest voter turnout rates this past presidential election with 73.5% turnout among the state's voting age population.
Despite the good reforms Maine has enacted, like our Clean Elections Law (which allows legislators to run publicly funded campaigns) and same-day voter registration, we can always do better. And when it comes to the health of our national electoral process, which is currently being legislated state to state, there is still much work to be done! Following is a list of a number of organizations that I have found helpful:
Legislature Passes Verified Voting Bill
Information on Maine's Paper Trail Law— requiring electronic voting machines to provide a paper receipt of a voter's ballot that can be verified by the voter— which I sponsored last session in the legislature.
Holding our government accountable for the decisions it makes in the name of its citizens— an organization that I am a big fan of, and not just because my mom now runs it!
